In Loving Memory of Eugene "Gene" Kysela
1945 – 2025

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Eugene “Gene” Kysela, at the age of 79 on February 20th in Edmonton, Alberta. Born in Budapest, Hungary. Gene immigrated to Canada when he was 11 years old with his parents, first stop being Vancouver BC. Gene’s legacy is one of helping those in need, being a passionate, spicy man, and having an intense dedication to both his family and his passengers.

Gene is survived by his wife, Mona, who honored and supported him throughout their 45-year marriage. His daughters - Sylvia Kysela and Katherine Poncelet (Aaron), as well as his cherished grandson Dale. Special extended family member Tina (Chubby). He was a proud man. A loyal companion to his beloved dog, Maxxie, who was always by his side.

Gene’s feisty devotion to his family was matched only by his kindness and compassion for all people and animals. He was always there to lend a hand to someone in need.

Throughout his lengthy career with Edmonton Transit, Gene formed countless connections with passengers, earning a reputation as someone who loved talking with people and getting to know them. Over the years, he would come home with an array of baked goods and handmade knitted items, gifts from passengers he had come to know and cherish. He periodically brought home the people as well, who quickly became friends or extended family! He took great pride in his work, treating everyone equally and his friendly nature among drivers made him a noticed figure among ETS.

Gene was an avid lover of cars. He owned many different vehicles over the years, including Trans Ams, Irocs, and Corvettes. There is no way to know the number of cars he owned/drove over his life. Cruising around, customizing and waxing the vehicles brought him great joy.

Gene's memory will live on through his family and the countless lives he touched along the way. Special thanks to Dr. Scanga, who was much more than a Doctor to Gene, Adriana who he adored, and the special nurses and staff at the U of A (Prabha & Meera). We are so grateful.

To our dear Dad, we hope you have found the peace and comfort you so longed for. You will forever be loved and missed.
A private family service will be held to celebrate Gene’s life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to SCARS.

  1. I will forever love and cherish you Gene. I want to thank you for being the kindest and most accepting man. Rest in peace good man.

    • He loved you so much ❤️
