Our eldest brother Laurie passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 22, 2025 in Edmonton, AB at the age of 73.
Laurie was born in Saskatoon, SK to Harry and Marlene O’Brien, and was the second oldest in a large family of 7 children. Laurie grew up mainly in Winnipeg, and graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1980 with a Bachelor of Commerce degree with Honours. In 1981, he successfully passed the Canadian Securities Course and began his career as a stockbroker. Laurie moved to Edmonton to be close to his immediate family in 1988.
As a young adult, he was an amazing gymnast and avid outdoorsman. In 1977, he obtained his private pilot’s license and, loving the thrill and feeling of freedom amongst the clouds, he flew whenever he could.
Laurie was a good man, had a HUGE heart, and helped anyone or any animal whenever he could. He was always up for a laugh, a gathering of those he loved dearly, a debate about current affairs , camping or a round of golf, and dancing - oh he could dance!

Predeceased by his parents, Harry and Marlene, sister Leslie, brother Michael, nephew Shaughn, Laurie is survived by his remaining siblings: Maureane O’Shaugnessy, Timothy Jon O’Brien, Shelagh O’Brien and Kerry Larsen; nieces and nephews: Jay Yuzwenko (Svetlana), Leigh Chapman (Jennifer), Dan O'Brien (Vanessa), Aiden Chapman, Laurel Thornton (Peter), Sandy O'Brien, Alannah Graham, Shannon O'Brien, Lindsay Leblanc, Connor O'Brien, Erin Graham, and Brianne Leblanc; 9 great nieces and nephews; many, many cousins and their families.
Good night Laurie Patrick - you were a good lad, wrapping you with love and light.

As per Laurie’s request, there will be a private celebration at a later date.

  1. Lost a very good friend.
