Mary-Lou Kess
January 25, 1936 – August 15, 2025

Mary-Lou Kess passed away peacefully on August 15, 2025, in Edmonton, Alberta, at the age of 89, from congestive heart failure.

Born in Schweinfurt, Germany, on January 25, 1936, Mary-Lou was the second of four daughters. She emigrated to Canada in 1955, beginning a new chapter that would come to define her remarkable life. In 1972, driven by her passion for learning and a deep desire to make a difference, she returned to school to earn her Bachelor of Education. She went on to inspire generations of students as a dedicated high school and junior high teacher in Edmonton until her retirement.

Mary-Lou was a woman of quiet strength and many talents. Among her notable accomplishments, she held a second-degree black belt in Judo—a testament to her discipline, determination, and spirit.

She is survived by her beloved son, Glenn St-Germain. She was predeceased by her three sisters, whom she dearly loved.

Mary-Lou will be remembered for her beautiful spirit, her unwavering kindness, and her loving personality. She touched the lives of many with her warmth, her wisdom, and her grace.

At Mary-Lou’s request, no formal service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to a local education or youth sports program of your choice.

  • Mark Prochnau says:

Tante Lou was a bright light in my life, especially in High School. She gave me a safe haven in her class away from the bullies; recognized me for who I am; and encouraged me to do whatever my heart wishes. I do not think I would be where I am today without her touching my life in high school and being there as a friend after. I remember her in many ways, and all of them encouraging, kind, and especially fun. She was able to overcome many obstacles in her life, embraced opportunities, and “marched” forward when many would have given up. She was an example, that when you have a will- there is always a way. I carry that attitude through my life today: I watch for opportunities, and when I set my sights on something, I will achieve it and have fun along the way. I remember the first time I met Glenn was in class when Tante Lou demonstrated her Judo with you, telling us to behave or else;) Thank you Glenn for being a great son, you are a wonderful legacy for your mom as well as those of us that she helped along the way. We will miss her, but promise to try and live up to her example.

I am so sorry for your loss. You always told such amazing stories about your Mom and it was wonderful to see how close you were. How she found a use for your vast collections of ducks and shared your sense of humour with things like Mothra.
