It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Melvin “Mel” George Reid on July 3, 2026, at the age of 83, following a courageous battle with dementia.
Born in Edmonton on April 15, 1943, Mel was a hardworking warehouse worker and truck driver who spent most of his career with the Alberta Liquor Control Board. He was always ready to lend a helping hand and was known for his kind heart, generous spirit, and willingness to help anyone in need.
Affectionately known as “Melvis” in his younger years, Mel loved singing Elvis Presley songs and never lost his love of music. “White Christmas” was one of his favourite songs to sing and became a cherished part of many family memories. Even in his final days, he could still be found singing to the nurses who cared for him, bringing smiles to those around him.
Above all else, Mel cherished the people he loved. He enjoyed firing up the barbecue, spending time with family and friends, relaxing in the backyard while admiring Jo’s beautiful garden, and sharing the company of his beloved dogs, most recently Bianca. His greatest joy was simply being surrounded by the people he loved.
Mel will be lovingly remembered by his devoted wife, Georgina “Jo” Reid; his children, Rick Reid (Kelly), Deb Olsen (Brad), Kat Reid (Rick), and Ken Reid (Joanne); and his many grandchildren, all of whom brought him great pride and joy.
He was predeceased by his brother, Robert “Bob” Reid.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the physicians, nurses, health care aides, and all the staff at CapitalCare Lynnwood for the compassionate care, kindness, and dignity they showed Mel throughout his journey with dementia. Your support meant so much to Mel and our family.
A celebration of Mel’s life will be held at a later date. Details will be shared once arrangements have been finalized.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Mel’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
He will be deeply missed, but his songs, his kindness, and the love he had for his family will never be forgotten.

We have many good memories with him. From taking Theresa and I horseback riding 😅 to a few camping trips. He made a mean omelette and great BBQ burgers. And let’s not forget he introduced us to Bodacious wine many years ago. And it is still my favorite. We will miss him very much. RIP Mel.

Dad, thank you for so many great memories. We’ll never forget the BBQs, our few but disastrous fishing trips that somehow became some of my favourite memories with you, all the fun times we had at the lake, and your attempts to recreate the Chinese dishes you learned from Yan Can Cook. Some were surprisingly good, while others, including a few memorable curry experiments, became family legends for all the wrong reasons.
We’ll always laugh about Christmas mornings when you woke everyone up way too early, except for Kath, who was already up, and watching you sneak up and scare people, especially poor Grandma.
More than anything, we’ll remember how much you loved your family. You were happiest when everyone was together, and nothing brought you more joy than spending time with your grandkids. Seeing the smile on your face whenever they were around is something we’ll never forget.
We miss you more than words can say, but we’re so thankful for all the memories you gave us. We love you, Dad, and you’ll always be in our hearts.
