In Loving Memory of Steve
Steve — the love of my life — gone too soon.
Everywhere I look in our home, there are reminders of him. The fireplace, the tile, the backsplash, the basement and yard — he poured his hands, heart, and time into all of it. He built this home around me, and every inch of it echoes his love.
Every night, he’d tuck me in with a chat and a kiss: “I love you. Sweet dreams.” He loved me so very deeply. I meant the world to him, just as he meant the world to me.
Steve had his strong opinions, his beliefs, and yes — his quirks. He didn’t drink and was proud of it. He was a careful driver — sometimes too careful. His hearing was going, but he had just started using his Waterpik. Every Friday, he steam-mopped the floors with care. He had oodles of tools — a very handy man — and he loved working alone, taking quiet pride in every job he finished.
He loved MAS*H, Corner Gas, Tim the Toolman, The Big Bang Theory, and Mayday. He had a soft spot for Smarties, Coffee Crisp, vanilla ice cream, pop, potatoes, eggs, and pancakes. Nothing made him happier than a fast-food breakfast at A&W.
He loved his dog Rover and missed him dearly. And more than anything, he loved his family — his sons, their partners, and our beloved Bailey. Family was everything to Steve. It was his joy, his purpose, his life.
He wanted to live to 100. He loved life. He told the best “stuck” stories. He was always misplacing his keys or phone — but never his heart. His heart was always in the right place.
And from his son:
“One thing I’ll add is that he prepared his boys for the world. He turned us into men, and we are capable without him — because of him. I think about what life might have been like if we lost him when he had his first heart attack in 2002, and I see every year since as a gift. A gift that helped shape us into who we are today.
Rover taught me how to grieve, and I’m so thankful for the memories I have with my dad. He will be missed forever — not because I need him, but because I loved his company. I love my father deeply. He wasn’t perfect, but he did a wonderful job.
All our trips to Haps, the silly faces to the waiters, the corny jokes — these are treasures. My father died a hero. Not in the way a soldier might, with one great act, but in the quiet way a father does — with millions of small, steady ones. I will aspire to be worthy of him until my own days are done.”
Steve lived with purpose, love, and quiet strength. He will always be with us — in the way we live, in the laughter we share, and in every small moment that reminds us of him.
