GERARD, JOSEPH WRIGHT (nee; Ulrich)
Sunrise: March 13th, 1956; Sunset: September 07th, 2025
It is with profound sadness and loss that we announce that Gerry has left this earthly existence. We also feel great gratitude, for being fortunate enough to have shared the many years of his life, years that have shaped who we are today and who we will ultimately become, as we continue our journeys, in the brilliant after-glow of his life.
Gerry was born in Wilkie, Saskatchewan to parents Leroy and Helen Ulrich (nee Derendorf), on March 13th, 1956. Gerry’s father died when Gerry was a mere 5 years old. Gerry and his mom relocated to Watson Lake, where Helen met and married Larry Wright. Larry legally adopted Gerry, which explains the new surname. He met the girl who would eventually become his wife, Sheila in 1967. Sheila and Gerry wed in 1978.
Gerard was commonly known as “Gerry”, by most people, but he was simply known as “G”, by our children and their friends. When Gerry wasn’t occupied with improving the gene pool, he was busy working for the Provincial Government in the Department of Correctional Services. He began his career in 1976, working with inmates in the Outward Bound Program in Nordegg. It was during that time that Gerry built a fiberglass canoe and discovered his passion for canoeing. His career in corrections continued from 1976 until his retirement in 2011, from head office, as Manager of Mental health Programs, Provincial Young Offenders Branch. Gerry was very proficient at his job, and was often a practical joker towards his colleagues, and as such, was often at the receiving end of such pranks. The stories of theses antics were notorious! Gerry was a mentor to many and was loved and respected by everyone that worked with him. His retirement years were spent wintering in California, with his wife, Sheila. During the spring and summer, time was spent with his children, their spouses and his 6 grandchildren. He enjoyed working with wood, playing games, and was passionate about hockey, but what he really loved was canoe trips with the guys.
Gerry was a gentle giant; at 6’4”, he towered above most people, a stature that mirrored the quiet strength and power of his personality. He never demanded respect, it was willingly given to him. He was simply and awesome human being, a walking example of what we all could aspire to be. He will be eternally loved, and he will be missed all the days of our lives.
Gerry was predeceased by his maternal and paternal grandparents, his mother, father, step- father, brother, 1 sister-in-law and 1 brother-in-law. He leaves to mourn his wife, of almost 47 years, Sheila; daughter, Jessi (Al); sons, Roy (Emma); Jojo (Erin); 3 granddaughters, Maria, Layla, and Rosie;3 grandsons, Jasper, Logan, and Nema; his brother-in-law, friend and canoeing partner, James; brothers-in-law; John, Nestor, Joe, and Dave; sisters-in-law, Therese Lorin, Shannon, Jana, Carla, Shivaune and Shelby; 19 nieces and nephews, and a multitude of friends and cousins.
May your spirit soar freely among the heavens and watch over our continuing journeys.
My deepest condolences go out to Gerry’s family. I worked with Gerry for many years in Corrections. He was wonderful person – intelligent, kind, professional. I’m very sorry to hear of his passing.
Sheila my heart and prayers to you and your family. I was doubly blessed to be able to see you and Gerry at the ABJ reunion and to hear from Gerry on his life, accomplishments and joys. He still embodied that same kind, caring and humorous teenager I first met 50 plus years ago. I know his presence will still be felt by many. He was a friend to so many and will be remembered for the difference he made.
Dear Sheila and family, my sincerest condolences on the loss of your dear husband and father, Gerry. I remember him as a kind and humble person in high school. Godspeed Jerry.
Sheila, I’m sorry for your loss. I always had respect for Gerry a kind and gentle man. Gerry and I played defense together in our youth and not many forwards got passed us.

Our sincere condolences to Sheila and her family. We’ve only known Gerry for a few years as we met Sheila and Gerry down south. We will always remember him as a very kind, soft spoken and gentle man. We will miss you both down south. May God watch over all of you and send love to your family.
My deepest condolences to the whole family, with prayers and lots of love. May you feel God’s peace and comfort in your hearts .
Sheila and family. My heart went out to you and your family when we heard of Gerry’s passing. I cannot imagine what you are going through but know you guys have bonded together, more now than ever. From what I read, Gerry is up there pranking the angels but find solace in knowing he will always watch over his family. Our deepest respect and prayers.
Sheila and family, I am so sorry for your loss. As you know, Gerry was a kind and gentle spirit, who was so fun to be around. I remember the classes we attended together and the time with Sheila and Gerry as part of the Newman crew. It was the time together as a group that made my university years so special. I am so glad I had the opportunity to meet up for dinner with Sheila and Gerry around his retirement, the laughter and smiles came as naturally as they did at university. Sheila, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this difficult time. My deepest sympathy.
Sheila our hearts are sad for you and your families hearts.
Gerry was a true “gentle man” He was kind in so many ways, always a smile and uplifting words as we remember (except when he played Catan….game on!!)
Heaven just received one of the good ones.
We will keep you and your family in our prayers during this time of goodbyes, knowing you will all reunite one day.
Blessings to you all
My sincere condolences for the loss of Gerry. He was a beautiful soul who was kind to everyone. I enjoyed the many years we worked together in the Young Offender Branch especially hearing how proud he was of his family. We were all excited for the safe arrival of Raspberry and the other lovely additions to your family. May he rest in peace.
Blessings to you Sheila and all your family. Gerry was a blessing and great friend to many of us Oblates – and Gerry’s “presence” when we had our many changes to connect. All my love to you Sheila and know that our “prayer candle” burns for you … as Gerry’s enjoys the blessings of the Great Promise, to see our God face to face. Fr Mike Dechant OMI
Sheila and family, you lived with a gentleman, a caregiver and a loving member of your family. He did make a difference and you will be aware of that for many years to come! He was a quiet leader and lover of life. He will be missed! Love to all of you!
Sheila and family, we send our prayers and blessings on all of you. Yes, the Gentle Giant is just as you describe him. I loved working with him as he started in Corrections. Although he was a guard and I was a Community Release Officer, it was a honour to work beside him. As one of the ‘best men’ at our wedding, he played a significant role in our early lives. I quote his obituary: He was simply an awesome human being, a walking example of what we all could aspire to be.
So sorry to hear about the loss of your dad Jessi! Sending love and hugs to you and all your family.
