One of 14 children of Andrew and Maria Wasylycia, Helen was born in Myrnam, Alberta, and passed away in Edmonton in her 98th year. She was predeceased by Jim, her husband of 48 years. She is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Karen; her three sons, James (Deborah), Michael (Carol), and Chris (Shane); her grandsons, Jonah and Jamie; and her two surviving siblings, Xenia and Joseph. She enjoyed a rewarding career as a registered nurse from her 1950 graduation at the General Hospital until her retirement in 1991, having worked at hospitals in rural Alberta and Saskatchewan and eventually in Edmonton. Beyond the nursing profession and raising a family, Helen was an excellent cook, well-known for her Ukrainian dishes (pierogi, cabbage rolls, borscht), as well as for her homemade noodles and ginger snaps. She enjoyed writing, and at her death left boxes filled with diaries, memoirs, and reflections. After retirement from nursing, Helen took up knitting as a hobby, and gave her children frequent gifts of colourful socks.
Helen requested that there be no memorial service, and that her body be cremated and her ashes buried beside those of her husband in Warspite cemetery. Helen’s family would like to thank the kind and generous staff at Shepherd’s Care Vanguard, where Helen spent her final two years.
