Lovingly remembered by his children Kim Belcourt (Wayne), Cindy Berg (Earl), Norman Suvan (Niki), Christopher Suvan, his sister Valerie Bergstrom (Glen), seven grandchildren, four great grandchildren, second wife Nicki Shoults (Tom) and a myriad of friends near and far.
Predeceased by his parents Arnold and Florence (nee Parish), his first wife Bonnie McDonald (nee Lynn), siblings Ted (Jean), Jean (Jim), Myrna Lee, and Carol (Keith).
Norm was born, raised and spent his life in Edmonton. From a humble start on an acreage in what is now Holyrood, He grew up with an avid love for being in the outdoors. At the age of 19, he got an early start in parenting when he married his first wife Bonnie and had two daughters Kim and Cindy. Taking to the profession of Land Surveyor and with his natural leadership skill he was running crews at a young age. Norm worked at Walker Newby and articled under George Walker to receive his Legal Land Surveyor Status and became a partner. Shortly thereafter Norm started ‘Suvan Fettig & Associates’ Engineering and Land Surveyors which grew to 70 staff. Norm also operated a separate Land Development company, working within the disciplines of the Land Planning, Legal Surveying and Municipal Engineering fields, executing Real Estate Developments in Alberta, B.C. and the State of Washington. Norm married his second wife Nicki in 1976 and had two sons Norman and Christopher.
Playing sports; Rugby, Squash, Handball, Curling, Golf & Skiing were always a big part of his life. In 1959 Norm founded Edmonton’s second rugby club, the Tiger Rugby Club (now known as the Leprechaun Tiger RFC). In 1971 seeking out and securing 30 Acres of land making a home for Edmonton Rugby and thus creating Ellerslie Rugby Park. Ellerslie Rugby Park served as the safe haven for rugby to flourish in Edmonton and was the envy of rugby groups around the world. Hosting numerous international games though its tenure. Norm loved the game and culture and coined the phrase “RUGBY IS A WAY OF LIFE”. Norm was truly honoured when he was placed in the Edmonton Rugby Hall of Fame. He was also a lifetime member of the Meraloma Rugby Club in Vancouver.
Norm was an avid outdoorsman who found happiness in the wilds. Fishing on the lakes for walleye, reeling in a big salmon, shooting clays, calling in a flock of duck in the fall or spying grouse in the underbrush, Norm was in his spot. He had a particular love for spending time and hunting with the members at The Pioneer Gun Club, where he proudly served as the President for many many years.
Any donations on Norm’s behalf can be made to the Leprechaun Tiger RFC Legacy Fund through http://canadianrugbyfoundation.ca (Select the Leprechaun Tiger RFC Legacy Fund from the Fund drop down menu).
A celebration of life will be announced soon. Norm did not want a service; he wanted a party!
